Scans the seafloor in the current map view for ledges, pinnacles, bommies and deep rubble near structure. No-take zones are dropped. Zoom to ~5–50 km across first.
Where the data comes from
What each part of a plan is built from, how fresh it is, and what it can't know. Your current limits: —.
How a reef gets ranked
Every reef in range is scored hour by hour, then the planner picks the stops and order that fish best and still get you home inside your limits, fuel and any bar window.
- Fish and terrain. How well the spot's ground (ledge, pinnacle, bommie, rubble) and depth suit each species you picked, by your methods.
- Fish movement. Light (dawn/dusk bites), tide phase and run strength, and which face the current is hitting: the up-current side of structure is favoured.
- Conditions. Wind, gusts and swell against your limits. Over a limit is a hard no, not a lower score. Visibility is estimated for spearing.
- Reputation (a multiplier on top). Known grounds get +0.35. Your logbook nudges each reef from −0.15 to +0.25: one good session +0.10, two +0.15, one blank −0.10. With no log entries, nothing changes.
- Rules. No-take zones are dropped, methods are checked against each zone, and reef fin fish are blocked during the closures.
Sources
| What | Source | Freshness |
|---|---|---|
| Wind, gusts, swell, wave period, rain, temperature, pressure, sea temperature, surface current | Open-Meteo forecast and marine models | Hourly, about 7 days ahead; refreshed hourly |
| Observed wind and pressure | BOM automatic weather stations, Torres Strait to Coolangatta (incl. Low Isles, Arlington Reef, Hamilton Island, Heron, Lady Elliot, Cape Moreton, Point Lookout) | Every 10 min |
| Observed waves | Queensland wave buoys (DES, open data) | About every 30 min |
| Marine warnings | BOM coastal waters warnings | When issued |
| Tides and bar windows | MSQ official predictions for the nearest gauge; a modelled tide with a wider safety margin if those aren't available. The window comes from your draft plus a safety margin. | Published yearly |
| Seafloor: ledges, pinnacles, bommies, routing around reefs | Geoscience Australia 30 m bathymetry (AusSeabed), Torres Strait to the Gold Coast. Routes use a 66–83 m grid with your draft plus margin. | Survey-based (2020); precomputed per launch |
| Reef names and outlines | GBRMPA reef features (via AIMS eAtlas) | Cached |
| Zoning | GBRMPA Marine Park zoning plus Queensland state marine parks: Great Barrier Reef Coast, Great Sandy and Moreton Bay | Cached per area |
| Size and bag limits, no-take species | Fisheries Queensland | Snapshot; check the Qld Fishing 2.0 app |
| Visibility estimate | eReefs (CSIRO/AIMS) monthly clarity baseline (Cooktown to Townsville; a general estimate elsewhere), adjusted for swell, recent wind, rain, tide size and distance offshore | Rough guide only |
| Sailing passage plans and wind overlay | Open-Meteo wind, gusts, waves and surface current on a 0.1–1° grid; boat speed from a generic catamaran or monohull model you can scale; land and shallows from the 30 m bathymetry at ~220 m cells | Forecast hourly, 7 days; depth grid built once per area |
| Artificial reefs | QPWS declared artificial reef sites (Moreton Bay, Sunshine and Gold Coast, Hervey Bay) | Refreshed monthly |
| Public moorings | QPWS public mooring register (class, size limits, depths) | Refreshed weekly |
| Island camping | QPWS campgrounds, located from OpenStreetMap. Lizard, Hope, Snapper, Russell, Coombe and Goold use the island centre, not the exact site. | Static list |
| Map imagery | Esri satellite, with its 30–60 cm detail at zoom 17–19 wherever it exists; Queensland Government aerial photography (10–50 cm on the coast and islands, CC BY-SA); AIMS Sentinel-2 cloud-free reef composite (from zoom 10, Reef only); GA depth chart and relief; Allen Coral Atlas reef zones; OpenSeaMap seamarks | Tiles; saved for offline when you use Save area |

What it can't know
- Forecasts are models. Check the BOM forecast and warnings on the morning, and look at the sky.
- Bathymetry is 30 m resolution, so small bommies and fresh coral heads won't show. Routes are not for navigation; use your chartplotter.
- Visibility is an estimate from conditions, not a measurement.
- Zoning and limits are cached copies. The official GBRMPA maps and the Qld Fishing 2.0 app win.
- Known grounds start from general local knowledge. Your logbook makes them yours over time.
